Who should come?

Maleny main street

The Maleny Celtic Winter School is designed to cater for all levels of playing ability and experience, from students just starting to learn an instrument to more experienced players who want to learn new approaches and techniques and learn a few tunes. The focus is on learning traditional music in a traditional way, by ear and from other musicians who are prepared to pass on their knowledge and understanding of an ancient but constantly evolving art form.

While some of our classes will cater for students of all levels of experience and skill, our fiddle classes, and our sessions for flute and whistle will be divided into sessions for players at beginner/intermediate level and a separate class for more advanced players. In the case of the fiddle classes, our two tutors will each teach two advanced sessions and two beginner/intermediate session to give all of those attending the benefits of their differing approaches to teaching.

Due to the demand in 2009, we have added "absolute beginners" classes into the programme this year. Experienced tutors will guide those who are just seeking to start out on whistle/flute and fiddle. ( 2 hour classes each day). And there'll be plenty of sessions for those who want to try out their new skills.

Because of the group nature of the workshops, a basic level of playing ability would be an advantage. Nicole Murray runs beginner tune sessions in Maleny on Wednesday nights for those wishing to brush up on their skills. She can be contacted on 0410 715 787 for more information about these sessions.
